- Method
- Qualitative / in-depth interviews
- Sample
- 12 high- and mid-spending users, 2 hours each
- Output
- Segmentation, journey map, comms guidance
Context & business challenge
A fast-growing Chinese social audio platform had limited visibility into its highest-spending users. Despite strong user acquisition, the platform lacked a systematic understanding of why users stayed, formed relationships, and became high spenders.
Retention and monetization were highly relationship-driven. The key challenge was identifying what transformed initial curiosity into habitual usage, emotional attachment, and sustained spending.
User insight was needed to guide future product, retention, and communication strategies as the platform continued to scale.
Research objectives
- Profile high- and mid-spending users across lifestyles, motivations, emotional needs, and platform behaviors.
- Map the user journey from acquisition and onboarding to engagement, retention, and high-value spending.
- Understand monetization psychology, including what makes users willing to spend more and what creates spending resistance.
- Identify retention risks and opportunities across product experience and brand communication.
Approach
- 12 two-hour in-depth interviews with active high- and mid-spending users across Taiwan.
- User journey mapping covering discovery, onboarding, relationship formation, habitual use, and spending.
- User segmentation based on lifestyles, emotional needs, relationship expectations, and spending behaviors.
- Ad testing to understand how existing communications resonated with different types of users.
Key insights
-
Users joined for functional reasons but stayed for emotional value. Initial triggers ranged from boredom and stress relief to companionship and entertainment, while continued use became increasingly tied to emotional support and everyday connection.
-
Belonging was one of the strongest drivers of retention. Once users developed relationships with hosts and other community members, the platform became part of their routine rather than simply an entertainment app.
-
Early relationship formation was critical to preventing churn. New users often needed support to understand the platform’s culture and mechanics, making proactive interaction particularly important during onboarding.
-
High spending was driven by emotional significance, not virtual goods alone. Spending intensified when users felt recognized, valued, or emotionally connected; product mechanics then amplified these motivations.
-
Different high-spending segments showed very different levels of sustainability. Financially secure, self-directed users tended to treat spending as an exchange for companionship and entertainment, while more emotionally dependent users could spend intensely but were more vulnerable to financial and emotional pressure.
Recommendations
- Strengthen early-stage matching and onboarding to help new users find relevant people and communities before initial uncertainty turns into churn.
- Design retention around relationships and belonging, rather than relying primarily on transactional rewards or additional paid mechanics.
- Prioritize more financially resilient, self-directed users for sustainable growth, while reducing dependence on spending driven by emotional vulnerability.
- Create lower-pressure ways to participate so established users can browse, listen, and explore without the social expectations attached to highly visible accounts.
- Shift communication toward authentic user motivations, including companionship, entertainment, community, and emotional support rather than focusing too narrowly on romantic interaction.
Impact
The initial Taiwan study led to an ongoing research partnership, followed by additional research across Malaysia and Hong Kong, and subsequently the US and UK to explore expansion into Western markets.
A product feature recommended through the subsequent research was implemented. Later interviews in US/UK markets found that users valued the feature, which helped them remain engaged with the platform for longer.
